Many women do not understand that they have the right to make decisions about their care, including the right to say "no." Women have the right to informed consent: accurate information about the risks, benefits, and alternatives to a suggested course of treatment, procedure, or medication, and the ability to accept or refuse that suggestion.
For general information about your rights, see this excellent summary at Human Rights in Childbirth. Improving Birth is working with lawyers now to provide a summary of your civil rights as a pregnant woman in the U.S., as well as resources to help you access those rights. In the meantime, if you have questions or need support, message our Facebook page or use our regular contact form and someone will get right back to you.
If you are in urgent need of support (for example, if you are facing an appointment for a medical treatment you are being pressured to consent to but do not wish to have, or have been threatened with a court order, police enforcement, or Child Protective Services), please contact us using the emergency contact form below.
